Abstract :rnThe aspergillus niger is has been immobilized for producing citric acid from pineapple extract. The immobilized cells were entrapped within sponge and calcium alginate gel. Sponge is a cheap material and has fine pores, so it can be used as support material for immobilization cells. Calcium alginate gel is widely used for immobilization of whole cells since its gel beads can be prepared by simple technique under mild conditions.rnProduction of citric acid from Aspergillus niger is immobilized within sponge and calcium alginate gel is lower than free cells. But in the third stage, the citric acid production from free cells decreased, whereas on the other hand the production from the immobilized cells increased. That means the immobilized aspergillus niger is can be used for repetitious or over prolonged periods for continuous reactor.
