The Functions of (Ing) Construction as Found in Israel My Glory Magazine

ABSTRACTrnrnIn English, there are many regulations of world formation that needs to be understood because it is one of important thing in English. In this study, the discussion is focused on functions of {-ing} construction found in Israel My Glory magazine issued on March/April 2011. The problem discussed is what functions of {-ing} construction that are found in Israel My Glory Magazine.rnrnIn analyzing the data, the writer uses the theories which are proposed by Quirk et.al (1985) and Noel Burton (1986). As the sources the data, the writer uses Israel My Glory Magazine. And the number of the data that the writer collects is 232 sentences containing {-ing} construction.rnrnThe result of the analysis shows that the five functions of gerund are found in the data. They are as subject (16,9%), as direct object (14,9%), as subject cmplement (0,9%), as prepositional complement, the second is as direct object, the third is as subject, the last is as subject and as appositive whereas as adjectival complement is never used.rnrnMeanwhile, in regard to present participle only four out of six functions are found in the data, they are pre-modifier in nominal constituent, (17%), post-modifier (38%), when one action is immediately followed by the same subject (23%), when two actions occur simultaneously by the same subject (10%), and when second action forms of the first (12%).
